Oxytocin, dopamine, and vasopressin are genuinely involved when we bond. The neuroscience is real. But reducing love to that chemistry is like reducing music to air pressure waves: technically accurate, and missing the point entirely.
The molecules describe how love moves through a body. They don’t describe what love means, why it’s worth protecting, or why losing it hurts in ways that pure biology doesn’t predict.
Consider: two people can have identical neurochemical responses — one to someone they’ve spent thirty years with, the other to a new infatuation that will dissolve in three months. The chemistry looks similar. The love is not.
What love means lives in what we do with the biology. The choices made on a Tuesday when neither person feels particularly loving. The patience extended when chemistry would recommend flight. The grief that outlasts the hormones.
The chemistry is the medium. It is not the message.
